African-American babies in Michigan are almost three times more likely
to die during their first year of life and twice as likely than white
babies to be born at a low weight, placing them at risk for
developmental delays and chronic illnesses, says a report released
today by Michigan's Children, a nonprofit advocacy group. Overall,
Michigan's children are in better health than a decade ago, but the
health gap between black and white children in Michigan is great and
will continue without focused attention to address the disparity, the
report says.
